A wacky day once again post-poned a regularly scheduled album on the list. Instead of doing Mumford & Sons, I went to a classic album I’ve listened to thousands of times so I wouldn’t have to focus too much on a new album.

“Master of Puppets” is my favorite Metallica album. It’s drawn comparisons to Metallica’s other two great albums “… And Justice for All” and “Ride the Lightning” for the mix of epic songs, hard-ass openers and dark and edgy riffs.

It starts out almost beautifully with the haunting intro to “Battery.” “Battery” is a punch-you-in-the-mouth type of song that is high-energy throughout.

The other three songs that round out the first four are some of the greatest pieces of music Metallica has ever orchestrated. The album-titled song, “Master” is one of the most iconic songs in metal history. It hits you right on the chin from the opening riff all the way through the beautiful instrumental section until the heavy solo and reprise.

“The Thing That Should Not Be” and “Welcome Home (Sanatarium)” round out one of the best opening album runs in rock history. “Sanatarium” is the walk-up song of current Phillies bench player Ross Gload, another little piece of trivia for my fellow Phillies fans.

“Disposable Heroes” and “Orion” are two other songs to note on the album. “Orion” is an all-instrumental masterpiece that puts you in an eight and a half minute trance.

I saw Metallica for the first time in November 2009 at MSG in New York. They played “Master” and attempted “Battery” but failed as the only two songs off this masterpiece of an album.

“Master” is my favorite album by Metallica. If you can’t handle that then screw you.
